Destiny Disappointment

Very disappointing cruise. Although the venues were good and the weather was superb. The food was very disappointing and accommodation was definitely substandard. The ship itself was old with the flooring coming away on the pool deck.
We were even told by the drinks waiter that because we were not all inclusive we would not be getting a larger amount of wine!! The day time entertainment was unavoidable with patronising hosts. However, the evening entertainment was good if not a little "hi di hi". I would not recommend this cruise ship to anyone. The staff were generally pleasant but reception staff could be abrupt. The waitressing staff were over familiar and intrusive.

At the end of the day the cruise on the Destiny is good value for money (we paid £330 each last minute) and did not go into the holiday expecting 5 star accommodation. We were very happy with our holiday experience aboard the Destiny and one can always avoid the "Hi Di Hi" goings-on and find a quiet corner. I was never approached or coerced into karoke or whatever by any of the entertainment staff, so I think some reviews are a little over-exaggerated! This ship is generally a bit tired looking however the cabins and public areas were very clean and the staff were very friendly - we did not find them obtrusive in any way. The pool deck area and loungers were very busy on times and it could be difficult to find a lounger, however Deck 7 was quite civilised and there were loungers generally available on this deck. Don't cruise with Thomson if you expect luxurious accommodation and if you expect overall parity with the more affluent (and expensive) cruise lines. However, we have cruised on the QM2 and the Thomson dining room service and food was ten times better than Cunard. If you like holidaying alongside British people, want value for money (I wouldn't pay £900 brochure price for this cruise),see interesting places in the Med. etc, then I would have no problem recommending this cruise to someone.

Booked on the telephone directly with Thomson cruises - prices shown as discounted on Thomson cruises website which they will still honour if booked over the phone i.e. usually about an extra £20 discount if booked online. We booked a 'cruise only' and arranged our own flights to Palma.

I was beggining to like your reasoned comments until I came to the ridiculous statement that Thomson dining room service and food was ten times better than cunard. When you receive your Berlitz guide I would suggest you look at their unbiased comparisons. Happy cruising. Richard

richard me thinks you put more faith into the berlitz guide than those people who like me have posted our unbiased opinions of our cruise experience on destiny,if my holiday had been rubbish I would have posted as such, I posted in good faith and have even elaborated to compare the holiday on destiny with other holidays I have taken in recent years. For this I have been branded by you as a ..pub food loving, butlins lover who would be better of on the overcrowded beaches of spain ...., all because I rated my holiday experience as 5 stars across the board. While the berlitz guide may play down the thomsons cruise experience when compared to others it is after all only a guide , a guide that appears to be at the end of the day the opinion of 1 man I quote about the guide and the author 'Douglas Ward’s personal work'. Now I am sure your going to respond to my comments but Id rather take the word of a dozen people who contribute willingly to this forum than going purely on the words of a commercial book. anyway Im off down to the pub now to see if there are any cold mutton pies left and discuss my next holiday to benidorm with my beer swilling lager louts , so richard I say to you and this will be my last comment on this subject regardless how you respond and yes I do expect you to respond.... HI DE HI...... cheers

Could not let your expectation pass unanswered. Your response, to my comment on 'Hutchings'26 July comment, was purely to challenge him/her on the validity of his food comparison, vis a vis Destiny and Cunard. I was not the instigator of the Hi di Hi or Benidorm comments. Yes, I used the Berlitz Guide to back-up my own experience. (I wrote a review on Destiny in February this year and QM2 earlier this month). The Berlitz Guide is just that, a guide. But I have noticed from an earlier posting of yours that you have been happy to utilise other quality rating guides when you mentioned your stays in 'top notch 4 and 5 star hotels'. Maybe selective recall? However, I fully accept that a large number of people thoroughly enjoy their times with Thomson Cruises and they are, again to many people, good value for money. I have tried Destiny and found them not 'my cup of tea', purely on quality and style. So I am happy to pay more for what I desire. I sincerely wish you many happy days cruising with Thomson and trust you enjoyed your cold mutton pie. Richard

opps I posted too fast and hence am going against my no more posting comment ... on re-reading my comments I find Im probably being over critical of richard since rereading through all the posts of this thread some of the comments I have attributed to richard where in fact made by others , if I have tarred you wrongly richard then I apologise. so back to my mutton pie......cheers all and finally finally this site has to be commended for offering the opportunity for information and exchanges to be freely shared , hopefully in a not to be taken too seriously manner , I for one know when all is said and done that my holiday experience regardless of the stars I gave it was so enjoyable as a result of all the wonderful info I gathered of these boards prior to setting sail ,so for that I say cheers everyone.

just returned on 17th july after spending 2 weeks on the destiny and I should point out that this was our 9th time on board this ship, My husband has walking difficulties and the help and support we have had from all members of Thomson crew members encourage us to return year after year. there are 550 members of staff on board and at least 25% of them know my husband by his fist name. our overall view would read Food excellent. Entertainment excellent as for over familiar and intrusive Bring them on. They are like our family at sea for 2 wonderful weeks of the year. Hope we do not see you when we return on 23rd july 2009!
