Extremely disappointing cruise

Cruise Ship: Thomson Celebration Sailed: March, 2008
Destination: Western Europe Age: 46-55
We have sailed on the Thomson line twice a year over the last 6 years.
The cruise director was very rude when we complained that on two evening the late film which we had planned to see following dinner was cancelled 2 hours before it was due to start and replaced with the football. The majority of people on board thouth that dressing meant a pair of jeans and a teeshirt. When I asked about the dress code which was mentioned in the cruise new as being smart he told me that there was nothing wrong with wear shorts of jeans to dinner. I can onlym say that the cruise had only attracted people who had no sense of behavour and certainly had no idea of table manners I would not think of going on a Thonson cruise again.

Yes you get the occasional traveller that doesn't put in an effort for dining in the restaurant but it is no reason to fault the ship. Important football matches do replace films, but again, a video can be bought or hired once home so where is the problem. It is unfortunate that sometimes we have to share the world with ill mannered people and also people who complain about anything and everything. We have sailed on the Celebration twice and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It is a budget cruise line but the crew and entertainment team cannot be faulted. Food is of a very good standard, unless you dine out at five star restaurants every night.

Why is it that some people who go on a cruising holiday think that is acceptable to dress in jeans and tea shirts for evening dinner. I think that this whole attitude spoils the atmosphere and ambience of the evening. You can dress down at home any day of the week, and when you go to the local pub, but on a cruise it is more acceptable to make an effort to dress for the occasion. It is all part of the holiday and gives a good impression of manners etc.

The trouble is that some people just DON'T HAVE ANY MANNERS! Which is exactly why cruise lines who want to keep up standard of behaviour should INSIST that passengers apply the dress code as advertised in their literature on formal nights. This usually deters such people from even entertaining a cruise, as it involves conforming to standards which they hate to do! Some people act like ignorant slobs at home, and unfortunately now, can carry on in their normal manner whilst on a cruise, at the expense of other passengers enjoyment of the "luxury" surrounding and, seemingly, with the cruise lines bleesings! They are now much more interested in making money that providing high standards. If you go down the local pub, then you have to expect it nowadays, but this should not be the case on a reputable cruise ship! Sorry, this rant has nothing to do with spelling, but I just think that cruises are a special type of holiday experience, and should not be dragged down to the level of Benidorm on Sea! Happy cruising.

We agree with the comments about the dress code, standards are slipping, spelling is another matter. We all make mistakes. But cruising twice ayear for the last six years does not make six to ten as stated. Twelve more like! But I suppose thats really trivial in the Grand scheme of things. We go away to enjoy ourselves and you cannot beat cruises.

You have a point about the spelling but, be fair, a significant number of postings on this board show a poor command of the English language generally. I do wonder about the character of the writers and the validity of their cruise comments or questions. But I haven't yet worked out if there is a link between poor writing and a preference for a particular dress style at dinner!

I agree, I am sure they are mere typing errors rather than spelling mistakes, come on, give them a break, they are only expressing an opinion. I myself love Thomson cruises and havent had a bad one yet- always excellent- maybe they have a point about the dress code, otherwise why do Thomson have a dress code in the cruise news?

Was this the North Cape Explorer Cruise? If so, I was on that trip and the MAJORITY of men wore tuxedo/DJ on formal night, in fact those who didn't looked under-dressed. Even on Casual nights, smart long trousers and polo/open-necked shirts were worn by men. Thomson are OK - the food, itinerary and state of the ship are very good indeed.

Are you writing about the formal night or all the other 'smart casual' nights? Jeans/shorts and teeshirts can look very smart and are a integral part of modern casual dress. I am surprised you went on this cruise as all your star ratings are low and you must have known what to expect having cruised Thomsons so many times before.
