My husband, myself, my son aged 13 and my daughter aged 20 went on a week's cruise with Thomson Cruises on board Thomson Celebration to see the pyramids last Easter. We had a wonderful time and my son gained so much from the experience both from an educational point of view and enjoyment of the trip. He actually cried on the plane on the way home because he didn't want to go home.
The ship, unlike some other cruise lines I have been on, catered for and welcomed children. I had expected that there may have been very few children on board but in fact there were quite a few. All the restaurants served good quality food and there was always plenty of it - you could never go hungry. Compared to some other cruise lines, there was not the variety of meals or the attention to detail that you would find say, on a Fred Olsen cruise, but this cruise catered for a younger clientele and more than met our needs. We were here to sightsee. The service was exemplary. Our cabin for four was surprisingly spacious and more than adequate to meet our needs. We spent little time on board taking part in activities as we went sightseeing in every port and it was quite exhausting. The entertainment on board was worth watching although could not be compared to the entertainment I had seen on some of the P&O ships. Still most of the time we were too exhausted to watch it. All in all the trip was extremely good value for money and I would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to see the pyramids especially families. The holiday has inspired me to take a Nile cruise.
Quality of Food4
We ate in the self service restaurant most of the time because it was quicker and I like to make my own coffee to the strength I like
Entertainment3
We did not see the entertainment every night but we enjoyed the dancing performances with all the bright colours and costumes
Shore Excursions4
We enjoyed them all but specifically our trip in the desert by jeep. It even snowed which only happens every 10 years we were told.
Staff5
All the waiters without exception were very polite and friendly. It is hard to single anyone out.
Children's Facilities3
We hardly used them as the very long shore excursions and heat exhausted us and we needed to rest to get ready for the next one.
Onboard Activities3
Yes, but again we did not really make use of them.
Cabins5
Space-wise and storage wise the cabin exceeded our expectations
Overall Rating5

I am planning a Red Sea cruise...how much are the excursions to Cairo and Petra? How long do the coaches take to get to the sights from the ports? thanks

Thank you for an interesting account, I am thinking of a similar cruise with Thomson as P&O do not seem to offer similar itineries. I was on the Thomson Island Escape about 10 year ago, and they do offer good value for money. P&O have that extra finesse for that extra price, but all cruises are brilliant fun!
