Q:
A couple of questions Im sure someone can answer. My husband and I are going on first cruise in Sept, Thomson Spirit, around the Med. Firstly, we have paid for full board, if you have a trip out for the day do you get lunch provided as surely we've paid for it?? Also, the excursions,is it essential you go with the Thomason organsiers or is it just as easy and cheaper to mkae your own way

We did half day in Morroco from the Spirit, no lunch included, but the full day in Rome trip a 3 course lunch was included. Lots of half day trips were on offer. The Maitre'd advised us on the morning of the Morroco trip not to eat anything onshore, for health reasons, and told us to take some buns and fruit with us from the breakfast buffet, which we did. The ship sells bottles of water to take with you for your trips, which were well priced at 00.60e. We had lunch when we returned about 2pm, so we didn't miss a meal. Do some research about your ports of call, you don't have to do the Thomson tours, and Thomson recognise this and provide port info and maps for you to do your own thing. Every port we stopped at had a shuttle service into the main area of the port. Bear in mind that full day tours one after the other can be exhausting, and it's nice to be able to get off the ship at your own pace and do your own thing for a couple of hours. We usually were off the ship after a leisurely breakfast, did a tour whilst it was still relatively cool, and back for lunch and a relaxing afternoon - you are on holiday after all !

Sort of like having your cake and eating it isn't it? Unless you go ashore on a ship's excursion and it lasts over a lunch or dinner period nothing is provided for you to eat or drink except some boat trips where it might be offered by the carriers. I know that having "paid for it " it is almost criminal that they don't provide it.
It is not essential that you take Thomson tours but sometimes going on a ship's excursion is the only way to see certain sites but very often not and invariably the official tours are dearer than doing it yourself. If you delve deeper into this site you will find under "excursions" a host of information which will gladden your heart and make up for the lost meals......Neil
